Reversal in fortunes as jobs flow back into Australian mines

Australia’s mining industry appears to be enjoying a rebound in the number of jobs coming back online. According to SEEK, there were 6.6 per cent more new ads for jobs in the mining, resources and energy sector posted to the job site in April 2017, compared with 12 months earlier.

“This is very encouraging news for people looking at working in this industry.”

Encouraging signs for those hoping to get work in mining

Michael Ilczynski, managing director for SEEK Australia and New Zealand, said job advertising growth for mining was ahead of any other industry nationally.

“For the past five years, [this] sector has been among the industries with the lowest job ad growth on SEEK, so this is very encouraging news for people looking at working in this industry, or those looking to develop their career in this industry,” Mr Ilczynski said.

“This latest advertising growth … is not just isolated to April. Over the [prior] three months, advertising across Australia for this industry has risen 70 per cent, when compared to the corresponding period in 2016.”

Mr Ilczynski said part of the reason for the rebound could be related to partial reverses in price increases for Australian resources such as iron and coal.

Western Australia experienced the largest rise in mining jobs growth in the year to April 2017.

What type of talent is the mining industry searching for?
As of April 2017, the most in-demand mining professional roles and their corresponding annual salaries were advertised on SEEK as follows:

  • Mining engineering and maintenance – $123,445
  • Mining operations – $113,451
  • Mining drill and blast – $107,138

Western Australia experienced the biggest rise in total new job ads (12.7 per cent year-on-year), followed by Victoria (7.4 per cent) and New South Wales (2.3 per cent).

Demand for skilled talent to work in Australian mining companies is ramping up.
