Three ways companies can combat cyberattacks
Australian firms are increasingly at risk of cyberattacks, in large part due to a lack of trained cybersecurity professionals in the workforce.
While the problem is being seen around the world, Australia appears to be one of the countries hardest hit by the skills deficit.
An Intel Security-commissioned survey conducted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies revealed that 88 per cent of IT decision makers in Australia think there is a shortage of cybersecurity skills in their own company and within Australia.

As the global digital economy grows, the frequency and sophistication of cyberattacks has increased and there is now a huge sense of urgency within organisations in terms of managing the risk.
“Our world has changed enormously in the last 18 months,” said Tommy Viljoen, lead partner, Cyber Risk Services at Deloitte. “I think Australia has realised the importance of protecting against what’s happening in the cyber world.”
Viljoen says organisations in Australia need to be looking at how they can adjust to new threats, their cyber strategy, and what kind of monitoring the should be doing.
A recent report released by Deloitte on ‘Changing the Game on Cyber Risk’ recommends a three-pronged approach to combat cyberattacks:
1. Be secure
Fortify your organisation to protect against the threat of known and emerging cyber threats. By establishing and maintaining security capabilities and setting up the necessary risk controls, organisations can greatly minimise the risk of being attacked and at the same time be in compliance with industry cyber standards.
2. Be vigilant
Scan, anticipate and detect intrusions and abnormal activity through improved situational awareness, scanning externally and across your organisation’s environment. Creating the capabilities to be hyper-aware will help you to stay one step ahead of the hackers.
3. Be resilient
No cyber defence can be completely water-tight and cyberattacks are somewhat inevitable. Organisations should have contingencies in place so that when a cyberattack does occur, the business is able to resume normal operations and repair any damage in the quickest possible time.
