How Melbourne is attracting the world’s best tech talent

Melbourne has become one of the world’s biggest tech hubs owing to its favourable infrastructure, lifestyle, business environment and ability to attract top talent, according to a new report.

The Savills Tech City 2017 report ranked Melbourne as the 14th best city in the world for tech companies and startups to be based.

Melbourne’s high ranking was due in part to factors that make it a great place to live.

Melbourne ticks all the right boxes

A recent news release by Savills explained that Melbourne’s high ranking was due in part to factors that make it a great place to live such as ‘buzz’ (culture, nightlife and entertainment) and ‘wellness’ (access to healthcare, greenery, pollution and traffic commuting).

“Everybody here knows Melbourne’s reputation as the world’s most liveable city, a title it has taken for six consecutive years, and so it is not surprising to see how well Melbourne ranked on this metric,” said Tony Crabb, Savills Australia’s national head of research.

“That single factor may well prove, more than any other, the most critical factor in further establishing and maintaining Melbourne’s preeminence in what is increasingly one of the most important employment and growth industries in the country.”

Factors such as health and wellbeing tend to be important considerations for new generation employees.

What young tech talent really wants

In the Savills report, buzz and wellness were given extra weighting to reflect the focus that younger employees tend to have on physical and mental wellbeing, and how this translates into their decisions on where to relocate for a job.

Director of Occupier Services at Savills Worldwide Nicky Wightman said it was important for cities to provide tech companies with a conducive environment within which to operate, in terms of infrastructure and access to funding.

“However, this alone won’t necessarily make them attractive destinations. Young tech talent increasingly wants to live in dynamic, healthy neighbourhoods within walking or cycling distance of the office,” Ms Wightman said.

“Cities that deliver those environments are therefore likely to consolidate their positions as destinations for tech talent and occupiers who want to attract the best staff.”
