NZ Payday Filing

Key Information

What is payday filing?

As of 1st April 2019, instead of filing an Employer monthly schedule (IR348) every month to the Inland Revenue Department (IRD), you’ll file employment information every payday in line with your normal payroll cycle.

Note: with payday filing you’ll continue to file your employer deductions and pay on the 20th of the following month.

Why is this required?

By providing the IRD with more timely information, this means they can provide your employees with more certainty about their tax and benefits position.

Who has to report and when?

Payday filing will comprise two sets of data:

  • Employment Information includes employees’ income and deduction information for a specific paydate.
  • Employee Details such as employee name, address, phone numbers, data of birth when available, employment start and end dates, tax code, Kiwisaver information and so on.

Employers and PAYE Intermediaries using payroll software (whether voluntarily or mandated), must report Employment Information to IRD within two working days of the payday that the data relates to.

Employees’ Details are required to be supplied to IRD no later than the next filing of Employment Information.

Filing electronically now required

If your annual PAYE and ESCT (Employer Super Contribution Tax) is greater than $50,000 ( the new threshold for electronic filing of employer information), this means you’ll need to file your employer information, employer deductions and employee details through our software.
